Can I be a member of Onyx Alliance if I am already a member of another young
professionals organization?
Absolutely! Onyx Alliance welcomes members who are already involved with other young
professional groups. Some of our members are also members of:
- PUMP - Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project
- Leadership Pittsburgh and LDI
- ULYP - Urban League Young Professionals of Pittsburgh
- and many more!

Is Onyx Alliance a group of stuffy professionals who only pretend to be open to
others?
Of course not, Onyx Alliance was founded on a guiding principal of being an inclusive organization that caters to professionals and progressive individuals.
In fact, much of the time in our initial meetings in 1999 and 2000 was spent discussing this very issue. Our members are as diverse as we could hope. We are Artists, Attorneys, Civic Professionals, Corporate Professionals, Doctors, Educators, Entrepreneurs, Medical Professionals, Non-Profit Professionals, Students, Everyday People and much more! We believe the most important trait our members share is that we appreciate forward thinkers with zeal and vision for this region and in general.

Why is there a need for an organization such as Onyx Alliance?
Over the
past 25 years the Pittsburgh Region has experienced a sharp decline in its population of young people. The decline in the number of young African Americans that remain or come to Pittsburgh is even worse. This has caused
a tremendous void in the overall livability of the Pittsburgh Region for professional and progressive African Americans. There are quality of life issues, opportunity issues and social issues that are specific to our audience,
and therefore not always addressed when dealing with the general "young adult" discussion. Onyx Alliance is an organization with which our audience can bond on a cultural level and a way by which individuals can become
involved in dealing with the root of this problem by striving to address some of the systemic challenges our region faces.

Why is the quality of life important for professionals and progressive people?
And why is an organization needed, can't they create their own high-quality lifestyle?
Onyx Alliance is exactly that – young progressives and professionals who are creating their own
higher quality of life. We were founded by our demographic, and understand that a high quality of life is not determined by a singular factor but a cluster of circumstances. For example, you may earn an above
average salary but you may not feel a sense of community.
Or you may have a strong sense of community, but cannot find the type of professional opportunities that will enable you to be financially stable. In either case, this will likely lead to a frustrating situation that forces one to reevaluate their residency in the Pittsburgh region. Onyx Alliance is about identifying strategies to overcome these types of issues and working towards a solution.
We certainly don't have all the answers, but we sure are looking for them.
